Demolition and Abatement before Construction !Built in 1920-1921 the home of future Vice President Garner was constructed prior to the awareness of certain construction hazards such as lead and asbestos. As several more phases of renovation to the museum are planned all areas of the building were tested for hazardous materials. As expected, lead was found in much of the paint and asbestos was found in the plaster.

Porch AdditionThe above porch was an addition (date unknown) to the home. However this addition was built after the 1921 construction and prior to the 1960s. Demolition revealed that it was constructed in several phases. The first phase of this addition was most likely just a breeze-way that connected the kitchen (in the far left of the photo) to the entry foyer. At a later date the porch was enclosed and then after 1952 the porch was enclosed more by the City of Uvalde and used as an exhibit area for the Uvalde museum.
The photo below shows the first layer of the porch removed. Abatement was necessary in this area due to the lead in the paint.
