FOOTER EXCAVATION

STARTED

DECEMBER 7, 2009

After a week of rain and cold weather, construction resumed on Monday, December 7, 2009 with the start of the FOOTER EXCAVATION stage. The slow job of digging out under the existing footer (see last photo on FOUNDATION PROBLEMS page) and creating an eight inch void under the entire width of the footer began. The additional unplanned aspect of the excavation is the additional gussets that were added after the original construction was completed. Since these run under the footer and touch the footers, these need to be removed.

Most of the work is hard and slow going due to the limited work space and the hardness (compactness) of the soil under the footers. A hammer drill is used on the concrete but the dirt work is done with grubbing hoes and shovels.

Once the soil is removed, the new helical piers will be the sole source of support for the home. In other words, the house is no longer sitting on the soil and when the soil contracts and expands it does so with out affecting or moving the Garner home.
